Genesis Lake Whangape Project Gets Underway

After delays due to COVID-19, Waikato RiverCare is pleased to report that project fencing has now been completed at the Genesis funded Tikotiko Bay project on Lake Whangape.

We have been super fortunate that after lockdown restrictions eased, ground conditions have stayed dry allowing Barakat Contractors to get out to Lake Whangape and construct new project fencing. They've done a great job working with our project neighbour to get all the fencing completed in just one week.

Our mana whenua contractors have also been busy working on the project, chemically ring barking grey willows and spraying weeds within the planting zone.

This Genesis funded project supports a multi-agency project at Lake Whangape involving DOC, Waikato Regional Council, Waikato-Tainui, Nga Muka Development Trust and Waahi Whaanui Trust. The project aims include protecting lake water quality and improving wetland habitat around the lake with funding support from the Waikato River Authority and Ministry for the Environment (MfE) through the Government's Freshwater Improvement Fund.
